EAST FROM WEST LYRICS
© Copyright Pamela Joy Crawford 2003 l Album: hannah’s child
All of the wrongs I have done, and all of the wrongs I will do
Have been removed from me, buried in the depths of the sea
As far as the East is from West
Is how far You’ve removed my sin
As far as the East is from West
Is how far You’ve removed my sin away from me
And now all You see is Jesus in me
Even the worst thing I’ve done, and even the worst thing I’ll do
Has been removed from me, making me want to follow You whole-heartedly
I’m sorry for what I’ve done again
And I need You to cover my filthiness with Your righteousness
So all that You see is Jesus in me

Behind the song
The chorus of East From West is based on the Psalm that promises: “As far as the East is from the West is how far my transgressions have been removed from me”.
The verses (claiming that there is nothing so bad that I have done that would undo this promise) were written in response to a man who spoke as if his heart was so black that he had no right to experience joy on this earth. He seemed to believe in the message of forgiveness, but held onto the burden of his black heart as he truly believed the consequences of his life circumstances (abuse) and evil thoughts were too vile to be overcome.
My own experience is that the black heart inside me constantly wants me to believe that it has more power over me than the promises of God to make me clean. But when I pray in the Spirit and read his word that promises I am free of my darkness because of what Jesus did for me, I am filled with joy. The huge black cloud and heavy, crippling burden is lifted from my back. I want this same peace and freedom for my friend and continue to pray that he will believe this verse in the darkest places inside.
